Dental hygiene that guarantees the durability of dental implants

First of all, a bad dental hygiene is often the principal cause of cavities, gingivitis and periodontal diseases. If these microbial diseases are not treated in time the tooth decays and becomes too damaged, the patient can lose this tooth.

Patients with implants have experienced one of the above-mentioned problems and are at increased risk of developing cavities or tartar.

Although the dental implant is less sensitive than a natural tooth, poor hygiene can severely damage it.

Rest assured, the maintenance of dental implants is not too complicated, it requires care and respect of proper oral hygiene in order to prolong the durability of this device.

Why does the implant require appropriate dental hygiene?

Two factors are crucial to ensure the durability of the implant, correct and adapted oral hygiene and regular follow-up by your dentist.

The anatomical shape of the implant is slightly different from a natural tooth and requires careful cleaning of the interdental spaces with suitable tools. The diameter of the dental implant is not exactly the same as that of a natural tooth, especially in the case of molars, they can measure up to 12 mm while the diameter of the implant can measure up to 06 mm only. Of course, the cylindric shape of the implant differs from that of natural teeth, which is slightly more triangular.

A rigorous and adapted dental maintenance

The right maintenance of dental implants contributes to the success and longevity of this treatment; i.e. better oral hygiene means a longer life of the implant. It is recommended to choose a soft bristle toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, but do not use the latter for the first 3 days after implant placement. Teeth should be brushed three times a day (after each meal) for a minimum of two minutes starting from gum to tooth, in order to optimize the efficiency of the brushing. Consider the use of dental floss as the toothbrush cannot reach all areas of your mouth. Don’t hesitate to discuss the appropriate hygiene habits with your doctor.

Regular visits to the dentist

Keep in mind that after the implant placement, you will have post-operative visits to monitor the progress of the treatment and to ensure your good dental health.

To avoid dental implant degradation, professional cleaning at the dentist’s office is necessary, in order to remove bacterial plaque, tartar from teeth and implants present in places that are hard to reach.

The risks of poor implant maintenance!

Poor maintenance of natural teeth results in the accumulation of plaque and tartar. The latter can lead to gingivitis, periodontitis and eventually the loss of teeth; with dental implants it is approximately the same scenario.

A bad hygiene can lead to risks of infections, sometimes difficult to treat. The major risk is an inflammation around the implant. It is a gum inflammation, caused by the presence of bacteria in the oral cavity, called peri-mucositis. It is characterized by swelling of the tissue around the implant and it must be treated in time.

If not treated in time, peri-mucositis can attack the bone tissue and lead to progressive bone resorption and destabilize the dental implant. In this case surgery is necessary.

Correct dental maintenance is the basis for healthy teeth and implants.
